Warm Christmas Vacations in Egypt: Nine Hours of Winter Sun, No Snow

Warm Christmas vacations in Egypt: golden afternoon light on the Nile at Aswan with felucca sails

Dreaming of warm Christmas vacations while the forecast at home says rain? Egypt swaps grey skies for about nine hours of sunshine a day in late December. Here is how to spend every one of them.

Why Is Egypt a Smart Pick for Warm Christmas Vacations?

Because December here is dry, bright and mild. Luxor and Aswan average daytime highs near 24°C, and Weather2Travel’s climate averages show no rainy days in either city.

Think warm, not hot. The sun does the heavy lifting while mornings and evenings stay crisp.

  • Dry: no rainy days in an average December in Luxor or Aswan.
  • Bright: about nine hours of sunshine a day in the south.
  • Mild: afternoons near 24°C, with nights between 7°C and 12°C.

For the month-by-month weather picture, see our Egypt in December guide. This page is about something different: how to use the sun.

How Many Hours of Sun Will a Christmas Week Actually Give You?

Between eight and nine hours a day, depending on your base. Daylight lasts about eleven hours, so the sun shows up for most of it.

WhereAverage December sun
AswanAbout 9 hours a day (88% of daylight)
LuxorAbout 9 hours a day (86% of daylight)
Hurghada8 to 9 hours a day (roughly 78% to 82% of daylight)
Rainy daysNone in Luxor or Aswan, one at most in Hurghada

These are long-term averages from Weather2Travel. Sources differ slightly for Hurghada, so read its numbers as a range.

Expert tip: plan around sun hours, not the thermometer. At 24°C a sun deck feels warmer than the number suggests. A shaded terrace after dark feels cooler.

The Nine-Hour Sun Clock: How to Spend a Warm Christmas Day

Start early, rest in the midday sun and finish at the water. That rhythm matches the light.

  • 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.: temples and tombs in soft, cool light. Bring a layer.
  • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: the warm window. Sit on deck, ride a felucca or wander a garden.
  • 3:30 to 5 p.m.: golden hour. Sunset arrives shortly after 5 p.m. in late December.
  • After dark: dinner indoors or on a covered deck. Desert air cools fast.

Where Is the Sunniest Corner of Egypt at Christmas?

Aswan, by a small margin. It logs about nine hours of sun a day, roughly 88% of daylight, the highest share in the data above.

Aswan is the Nubian south, where the Nile slows around granite islands. Sail past Elephantine Island, then wander a Nubian village in the afternoon glow. Our things to do in Aswan guide lists the brightest stops.

Luxor is a close second, at 86% of daylight. It also has the coolest nights, so mornings feel brisk. Spend them at the temples, as in our Luxor in two days plan, then claim the afternoon sun.

Hurghada trades temples for turquoise. Nights are the warmest of the three, near 12°C, and the sea stays around 24°C to 25°C. That suits a short dip and a long lie on the sand. Our snorkeling in Hurghada guide is a good place to start.

How Does a Sunny Egypt Christmas Differ From a Beach-Resort Week?

It trades one long beach day for several short, bright ones. Egypt is milder than a tropical resort, so expect sunbathing with a light layer, not a swimsuit from dawn to dusk.

  • Pace: a resort week repeats the beach. Egypt changes the scene daily, with a temple at nine, a river at noon and a bazaar at dusk.
  • Air: dry and mild, with no heavy humidity to wear you down.
  • Evenings: cool enough for a proper dinner out rather than a late beach bar.

Our team’s rule of thumb is simple. If you want sun and a story in the same week, pick the Nile. If you only want sand, pick the coast.

Which Sun-First Route Fits Your Warm Christmas Vacations?

Pick the route by how you want to spend the bright hours.

RouteHow it uses the sun
4-night Nile cruise, Luxor to AswanAfternoons on deck, temples in cool morning light
6-night dahabiya cruiseA twin-sail boat with a handful of cabins, so long hours on the water
2-day Luxor trip from HurghadaRed Sea beach time, then an overnight in Luxor

Why Does a Nile Sunset Beat the Christmas Lights?

Because the best show of the day is free, and it starts around 4 p.m. The light turns amber, the palms go dark against the water and the river goes quiet. Feluccas drift home.

Questions Travelers Ask About a Sunny Christmas in Egypt

How many hours of sunshine do warm Christmas vacations in Egypt really get?

Around nine hours a day in Luxor and Aswan, and eight to nine on the Red Sea coast. Daylight lasts about eleven hours, so most of the day is bright.

When is the best hour to sit on a Nile cruise sun deck in December?

Late morning to mid-afternoon, roughly 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. After that the air cools quickly, so keep a jacket close.

Do you still need sunscreen in Egypt at Christmas?

Yes. The air is mild, but hours on a deck or a felucca add up. Pack sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.

What if a cloudy day hits your Christmas week in Egypt?

It is rare, but it happens. Swap in an indoor highlight such as the Luxor Museum or the Nubian Museum, then return to the river for sunset.
