Valley of the Kings Tour: Private Day Trip with an Egyptologist

Luxor Tours & Day Trips, Egypt Day Tour

Overview

This private Valley of the Kings tour takes you into the royal necropolis of ancient Thebes with your own Egyptologist guide. The standard ticket includes three tombs chosen from those open on the day; Tutankhamun’s tomb is an optional extra ticket. A full day from 70 $ per person including hotel pickup in Luxor, entrance tickets and lunch.

No site in Egypt rewards a real guide like the Valley of the Kings. Sixty-three tombs cut into a silent desert valley, painted ceilings that look finished yesterday, and stories of tomb robbers, archaeologists and boy kings — this Valley of the Kings tour turns corridors of hieroglyphs into narratives you will retell for years. We are based in Luxor, and the West Bank is quite literally our neighbourhood.

What Your Valley of the Kings Tour Includes

Your Valley of the Kings tickets for three tombs are included, and your Egyptologist recommends the best-preserved ones open that morning — the rotation changes to protect the paintings. We time the visit for early morning before the heat and the coach crowds, and pair the valley with the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon to complete the West Bank story. Prefer to see both banks in one day? Choose our East and West Banks full day tour instead.

Your Day on the West Bank

Morning pickup and the Valley of the Kings

Pickup from your Luxor hotel around 7:00 AM and a short drive into the desert hills of the UNESCO-listed Theban necropolis. Explore three royal tombs with your guide’s commentary outside each one (guides may not lecture inside the tombs — ours prepare you properly before you enter, so you know exactly what you are looking at).

Optional: Tutankhamun’s tomb

The most famous tomb in the world is small, but standing in it is a bucket-list moment. Entry requires a separate ticket bought on the day — your guide will handle it if you want it.

Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon

Continue to the cliff-carved mortuary temple of Egypt’s great female pharaoh, then stop at the 17-metre Colossi of Memnon before a relaxed lunch at a local West Bank restaurant. Back at your hotel by mid-afternoon.

Why Pharaohs Chose This Hidden Valley

For roughly five hundred years, from the 16th to the 11th century BC, the pharaohs of the New Kingdom abandoned pyramids and cut their tombs deep into a remote desert valley behind the Theban cliffs. The pyramid-shaped peak of al-Qurn watching over the site, the single guarded entrance and the sheer rock all made it easier to hide the royal burials from tomb robbers. More than sixty tombs have since been found here, including that of Tutankhamun, discovered almost intact by Howard Carter in 1922.

The tombs themselves are long painted corridors descending to a burial chamber, their walls covered with texts and scenes meant to guide the king through the underworld. Because bright sunlight and crowds damage the fragile pigment, the authorities rotate which tombs are open, so no two visits are quite the same — another reason a knowledgeable guide makes the difference between a quick look and a real understanding.

For the current list of open tombs and official ticket details you can check the national tourism authority at Egypt.travel before you go.

Practical Notes

Bring a hat, water and comfortable shoes — the valley is exposed desert. Photography without flash is permitted in most tombs with a photo pass (ask your guide). Morning visits beat both heat and crowds; in summer we start earlier. For the sunrise view over the valley itself, add our hot air balloon Luxor flight before the tour — the two combine perfectly in one morning.

Your Luxor Valley of the Kings Tour, Step by Step

This private guided tour to the Valley of the Kings runs the West Bank in the proven order: tombs at opening time while the air is cool, then Hatshepsut’s terraces, then the Colossi of Memnon — with your own Egyptologist and vehicle throughout. It is the classic Luxor Valley of the Kings tour, done at your pace rather than a group’s.

Why Book Private with El Sultan?

In the Valley of the Kings, private means choosing your own tombs — not the three the bus queue dictates:

  • Tomb strategy from a licensed Egyptologist — which tombs are open, which extra tickets (Seti I, Nefertari-era art) are worth it today, decided with you at the gate.
  • Your own air-conditioned vehicle — leave when you are ready, skip the 40-seat bus hotel rounds.
  • Flexible timing — beat the crowds at opening or linger where you love; the day bends around you.
  • Family-friendly — kids nap, grandparents rest, nobody is left behind.
  • Direct local team — one WhatsApp away before, during and after your trip.

Yes — the standard three-tomb ticket, plus Hatshepsut Temple and all transfers and lunch, are included in the price. Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramses V/VI tombs carry optional extra tickets.
