Camels near the Giza pyramids, a favourite stop on a New Year's family vacation

Can a New Year’s family vacation work without tired, grumpy kids at midnight? In Egypt, it can. Warm days, short story-rich sights and flexible evenings let you decide how late the night lasts.

Which Age Group Gets the Best New Year in Egypt?

Every age finds something, but the mix changes. Young children love boats and beaches. Older children love camels and ruins. Teens love anything with a dawn start or a desert night.

Age groupWhat works best
ToddlersOne Red Sea base, short transfers, a pool and early nights
Ages 6 to 12Pyramids, camels, felucca sails and treasure-hunt style temples
TeensBalloon flights, desert camping and snorkelling
GrandparentsA slow Nile boat with a private guide

Travelling with several generations? Pick one anchor activity per day and let the rest bend around it.

When Do School Breaks Meet New Year in Egypt?

In many countries, winter breaks run from about December 20 to January 3. Check your own school calendar, because dates differ. That window sits in Egypt’s cool, dry season.

Aim to arrive a day or two before December 31. Flights slip. Kids sleep better when the first night is not also the party night. The CDC advice for children travelling to Egypt is worth a read before you pack.

The Early Midnight Trick: How Do You Celebrate With Young Children?

You do not have to wait for the clock. Many family hotels and resorts run an early countdown or a kids’ party in the evening. If yours does not, make your own. Toast with juice at nine, watch the lights from your balcony, and let the little ones sleep.

Older kids can join the real countdown. Pick a hotel with a family-friendly ballroom, or a Nile boat with a short, relaxed gala. Ask the operator how children are treated on December 31.

Which Sights Win With Children?

The ones with a story and a short walk. Keep each visit under two hours and add a treat afterwards.

  • The Pyramids: a camel ride and a Sphinx photo make it memorable. See our Pyramids Cairo tour guide.
  • A felucca sail: calm water and big sails suit every age.
  • A balloon flight: check age rules with the operator. It is magical for teens.
  • The White Desert: chalk rocks and a campfire. Our 3-day White Desert expedition starts from $370.

Should You Choose a Resort, a Cruise or a Mix?

For most families, a mix works best. A resort gives rest. A boat gives history without repacking. Combine them if you have ten days.

Our 3-night Nile cruise starts from $650. The 11-day family program starts from $1,900 and mixes Cairo, the Nile and the pharaohs. For the beach side, see things to do in Hurghada for families.

How Do You Keep Everyone Happy on a Long Itinerary?

Keep a rhythm: one big morning, one slow afternoon. Our guides suggest a simple rule. If the kids are bored, shorten the visit, not the trip. A shaded café break often saves a whole day.

  • Start early and finish sightseeing by lunch.
  • Pack snacks, hats and a light jacket for evenings.
  • Choose private tours so the pace follows your children.

Field tip: hand each child a small camera or notebook. A scavenger list, like finding a cobra or a feather of Maat, turns temples into games.

What Should a Family Pack for a Winter Trip to Egypt?

Layers, sun protection and comfort items. Days feel like early summer in the south, while nights feel like early winter.

  • For day: hats, sunglasses, sun cream and light long sleeves for temples.
  • For night: a fleece or jacket for each child, plus socks.
  • For comfort: reusable bottles, wet wipes and a small snack stash.
  • For fun: a card game and a notebook for long drives.

Our Egypt packing guide covers modest dress for temples and churches.

How Much Can a Family Expect to Spend on Tours?

Day tours are priced per person, so costs scale with group size. These “from” prices help you sketch a budget before you ask for a quote.

Child rates can differ by tour. Ask for ages in your quote request, and we will confirm them.

New Year’s Family Vacation: Quick Answers

Can children stay up for midnight and still enjoy January 1?

Yes, with a late start on the first morning. Book sightseeing for after breakfast, not at dawn, and leave the afternoon free.

Do connecting family rooms sell out at New Year?

They can. Reserve early and ask for the room type in writing. Some hotels add a gala supplement for children, so ask about that too.

Is Egypt too cold for children at New Year?

Days are warm and sunny, but evenings and early mornings are cool. Pack layers, hats and a light coat. A balloon at dawn needs real warmth.

What health basics should a family pack for Egypt?

Bring rehydration salts, plasters, sun cream and any regular medicines. Drink bottled water. Check with your doctor before you go.
