Warm sea, bright days and a countdown on the sand. New Year in Sharm El Sheikh is easy to love, and easy to plan once you know the layout. Here is how the resort town works in winter, and how a Hurghada trip can add the sightseeing Sharm itself cannot.

Why Do Travelers Pick Sharm El Sheikh for New Year?

Because winter here feels like late spring. Days are sunny, the sea is swimmable and the nightlife keeps going after the fireworks.

Sharm sits at the southern tip of Sinai. Mountains behind, reefs in front. It is compact, so hotel, beach and party are rarely more than a short taxi ride apart.

Most visitors come for three things: reef time, a lively midnight and a few days of doing very little. If that is your plan, Sharm delivers.

Where Is the Party on New Year’s Eve in Sharm?

Hotels run most of the big nights. Many serve a gala dinner with a live band, a DJ and a midnight toast. Some add a compulsory gala supplement, so read your booking terms before you pay.

Outside the hotels, the liveliest streets are around SOHO Square, Naama Bay and Sharks Bay. Travel specialists who sell the region, such as Admiral Travel, point to the same trio when describing the festive mood.

Field tip: Book your table early. Gala dinners fill first, and late bookings often end up with the worst seats and the highest price.

Which Area Suits Your Style Best?

Sharm is really three or four resort zones. Each has its own pace.

AreaBest for
Naama BayWalkable promenade, cafes and easy nightlife
SOHO SquareConcerts, shows and a big party crowd
Sharks BayReef access with a calmer evening mood
Sharm El MayaOld-town feel, Al Sahaba Mosque and local food

Not sure which fits? Pick Naama Bay if you want everything on foot. Choose Sharks Bay if you want sleep after midnight.

Can You Dive and Snorkel Over the Holidays?

Yes, and many people do. The reefs are the real star of Sharm.

Ras Mohammed National Park and the Strait of Tiran are the classic day trips. Boats leave early, so plan a quiet New Year’s Eve if you have a morning departure on January 1.

Wind matters more than rain in winter. Bays with shelter stay calm, while exposed beaches can turn choppy. Ask your dive centre which site is best on the day.

What Should You Pack for a Sharm New Year?

Think layers. Daytime is warm enough for a swimsuit, but evenings can feel cool near the water.

  • A cardigan or light jacket for the midnight countdown
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest
  • Comfortable sandals for stone promenades
  • One smart outfit for the gala dinner

How Do You Spend January 1 in Sharm?

Slowly. Most restaurants open late, and the beach clubs are quiet until noon.

A late brunch on the promenade is a good start. Then pick one gentle plan: a glass-bottom boat, a sunset walk in Sharm El Maya or a spa afternoon. Save the early boat trips for January 2.

Families do well here too. Shallow bays and hotel kids’ clubs keep younger travelers busy, while parents get a proper rest after a late night. Just ask the hotel which pools are heated in winter, because the water can feel cool in the shade.

Travelling in a group? Agree on one shared evening and leave the rest flexible. A New Year week works best when nobody has to be somewhere every day.

Want More Than Beach Days? Add a Hurghada Trip

Here is the honest part. Sharm is a superb beach and reef base, but it is not close to Egypt’s great monuments. Cairo and Luxor are a long way off.

Hurghada solves that. It sits on the mainland coast, with day trips and short tours to the pharaonic sites. We run those from Hurghada, not from Sharm, so a Hurghada base is the practical choice if sightseeing matters. Our guide to Hurghada vs Sharm El Sheikh lays out the differences side by side.

Sharm New Year: Quick Answers

Does Sharm El Sheikh stay warm on New Year’s Eve?

Days are usually in the low 20s °C. Evenings drop to the mid-teens, so bring a layer for the countdown.

Do I have to pay for the gala dinner?

Often yes. Many hotels add a mandatory New Year’s Eve supplement. Check the exact wording before booking.

Is the sea warm enough to swim?

Yes. The Red Sea stays around 22°C in January, which is fine for swimming and snorkelling, especially with a thin wetsuit.

How do I combine Sharm with Cairo or Luxor?

Treat them as two separate trips. Sharm is the reef-and-party stop, while Hurghada is the easier gateway for Cairo, Luxor and a Nile cruise. Confirm ferry or flight options for the day you travel.

Ready to Pick Your New Year Base?

Sharm gives you reefs, nightlife and winter sun. Hurghada gives you the same sun with the pharaohs within reach.
